Ponder: Rash Words in Trying Times
Scripture: “Do you still hold fast to your integrity? Curse God and die!” (Job 2:9. NKJV).
Job was right. What his wife said was foolish (Job 2:10). But before you write her off as a total reprobate, put yourself in her place and see how you do.
Not that long ago this lady had it all. As the wife of a fabulously wealthy patriarch, she had successfully raised ten children who were grown and out on their own. A virtual army of servants waited on her. She wanted for nothing.
All of that changed radically in a shockingly short period of time – less than a day. All of the livestock – stolen or burned up; all but four servants – dead; all ten of her children – dead. And now she has to see her husband, whom she undoubtedly loves and has walked by his side for decades, covered head-to-foot with loathsome, foul-smelling, oozing sores.
Situation hopeless! I can’t take any more! Just get it over with! Curse God and die!
In no way should we justify what she said. It was wrong. Satan had claimed that Job would curse God (Job 2:5). Job didn’t, but his wife urged him to. She unwittingly allowed herself to agree with the devil!
But while we shouldn’t justify what she did, we ought to have some patience and mercy for Mrs. Job and others today who are in times of despair. How many of us could go from riches to rags as she did without some measure of despondency, perhaps even saying something we shouldn’t?
So, when you encounter someone who isn’t dealing well with severe trials, remember the words of James 2:13, “Judgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy.”
Hymn: “Oh To Be Like Thee”
Prayer: Father, please help us not to despair when we are tested. And help us to be merciful to those around us who aren’t handling severe trials as well as they should. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
