The late Gus Nichols once compared Christianity to running for an elected office. Would we be “re-elected” based upon our “record” of attendance, contribution, hospitality, etc., he asked? That’s an interesting analogy, especially in this election year.

Public officials are required to practice “full disclosure” — that is, all their records (especially financial) are supposed to be made available to the public. Voters are influenced by what they see on those records, so some politicians try to hide incriminating items!

Christians have no choice but to practice “full disclosure” with the Lord. “All things are naked and laid open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account” (Hebrews 4:13). Brethren might not know why I am absent when the church meets, but God knows. Others have no idea what my income is, or what my obligations are, or how much I contribute, but God is perfectly aware.

What if we had to practice “full disclosure” with each other in the church, or even with the whole world? Would your record be a commendable example for other Christians to follow? Based on your record, would you be “re-elected” as a member of the congregation?

What about people of the world? Could you point to your record and say, “This accurately represents the life of a faithful Christian”? Would the facts and figures show that you are truly putting first the kingdom of God and His righteousness? (Matthew 6:33)

I’m glad we don’t have to campaign for election as Christians. But isn’t it interesting to ponder, “What if . . .”?
